Gorkundere Valley is one of the unique valleys located in the Göreme region of Cappadocia, known for its distinctive geological features. The valley was formed millions of years ago by the accumulation of tuff erupted from the region’s volcanic mountains and the erosion of these layers by wind and water over time. This natural process shaped the soft rocks, creating winding walking paths and intriguing rock formations throughout the valley. Surrounded by high walls, the valley offers a sheltered microclimate. Narrow passages, natural cavities, and carved rock structures encountered along the way distinguish Gorkundere from other valleys.
Kızılçukur Valley is especially famous for its sunset views. It is one of the most popular “sunset points” in Cappadocia. The area is a favorite for photographers and nature hikers, thanks to its easy walking trails.

In some parts of Gorkundere Valley, it is possible to encounter historical rock-carved structures and small places of worship. These structures served as hiding and retreat spaces during the early Christian period in Cappadocia. The high valley walls provided natural protection and a safe haven for the inhabitants. However, the valley’s true charm comes from nature itself. Moss-covered rocks, wildflowers that bloom in different seasons, and narrow water streams through the valley offer visitors a visual feast.

Gorkundere Valley is ideal for travelers seeking silence and unity with nature. Unlike the more crowded valleys of Cappadocia, you may hear nothing but birdsong while walking here. This valley is also a treasure for photographers, offering mesmerizing views during sunrise and sunset. Additionally, Gorkundere is quite popular among cycling routes. Its rugged terrain makes it suitable for both experienced hikers and intermediate nature lovers.
Entrance to Gorkundere Valley is free. There are no ticket booths or checkpoints. The easiest way to access the valley is to walk from Göreme center or drive toward the direction of Love Valley. At a certain point along the road, a signposted path leads down into Gorkundere. Visitors arriving by private vehicle can park near the valley entrance and start walking. However, motor vehicles are not allowed inside the valley.
